The Chevrolet TRU 140S concept was one half of a duo of concept cars GM unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show today. Both cars are aimed at younger American buyers, and the styling has been influenced by the feedback from potential customers across the length and breadth of the land. One things for certain, the TRU 140S is unlike any Chevrolet that’s come before it. It’s as different from Chevrolet’s current crop of cars as the great Professor Stephen Hawking is from Kim Kardashian.
According to GM’s survey of potential buyers, features like functionality, connectivity, fuel economy and affordability were most important. Using that information Chevrolet’s designers scurried off to their drawing boards and sketched out something they’re calling an ‘affordable exotic’. Whether that combination is actually possible is debatable. But what is for certain is the Chevrolet TRU 140S is a front-wheel-drive three door hatchback based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Cruze.
The Chevrolet TRU 140s is powered by a 1.4 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder equipped with stop/start technology. It produces 150 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque, and returns 40 MPG on the highway. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic, but Chevy say an optional 6-speed manual could be fitted.

At the moment the Chevrolet TRU 140S isn’t fitted with a finished interior as the project is ongoing and over the coming months the prototype will continue to be developed. Along with its sister concept, the CODE 130R, the TRU 140S will be traveling to all the major 2012 automotive events in order to help gauge public reaction.
