Dodge Grand Caravan R/T

Let’s not beat around the bush. This is a minivan. It looks like a minivan, it feels like a minivan, and it is equipped like a minivan. It’s a familiar one, too, as the Dodge Grand Caravan has been a mainstay of soccer moms and suburban families for years. This is the R/T version, though, and while no amount of tuning or tweaking could hide the minivan identity, this is simply as good as it gets in the people carrier segment. As is probably the case with many of you out there, we have been sworn enemies of vehicles like this, so can a “performance-oriented” minivan win over a car guy?
Chrysler came out with the R/T package on the Grand Caravan last year and marketed it as a sort of “man van”. It was a somewhat silly but understandable step. Marriages and families are built on compromises, especially in the automotive department, so Chrysler was looking to serve the folks who had to settle on a minivan but still had a yearning for more oomph. What they’ve given them is a 283 horsepower version of the Pentastar V-6, beefed up suspension, polished aluminum wheels, a different front fascia, a couple of R/T badges, and not much else.
That’s not to say Dodge Grand Caravan R/T is sparse. Quite the opposite, in fact. All in all, it’s very similar to a regular Grand Caravan. It has front-wheel-drive, power sliding doors, a rear backup camera, high roofline with lots of visibility, and the great “Stow n’ Go” second and third row seats that let you go from seating seven people to having a cavernous flat-floor storage area in a surprisingly short period of time. Dodge therefore hasn’t gotten carried away and kept more emphasis on practicality than performance. After all, what would be the point of a souped-up van that couldn’t do the things that vans were designed to do in the first place?
Let’s get back to the question – can a “performance-oriented” minivan win over a car guy? Frankly, after a few days of driving the R/T you start to forget or care that you’re rolling around in a minivan. It does have some pickup and it’s probably the “sportiest” people carrier out there, but it’s not a vehicle that wills you to push it hard and the six-speed automatic is pretty average. But at the end of the day it does everything you’d expect of it, it’s damn practical, and the kids loved it. While we’re not jumping on the minivan train for our next family hauler, we do have a deeper appreciation for why guys go to the dark side. It was never destined to be anybody’s dream car, but the Grand Caravan R/T, with enough power to get you into trouble and enough utility to keep your kids out of it, can probably be crowned the king of the minivans. If there is such a title.

Ram Unveils 10th Anniversary Rumble Bee Concept at Woodward Dream Cruise

Do you remember the Ram Rumble Bee introduced in 2003? That drone yellow pickup based on the '60's Super Bee muscle car? Well, to celebrate its 10 year anniversary, Ram presented the new HEMI-powered Ram 1500 Rumble Bee concept at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit.

The Rumble Bee concept was created around the 2013 Ram 1500 R/T and faithfully sticks to the traditional aesthetics of the Rumble Bee. Painted in drone yellow with a matte finish, it features a "Speed Bee" design inside the black stripes that fade into honeycombs on each side of the car. These stripes span the sides of the truck and then curve around the top of the bed over the Mopar tonneau and are reminiscent of the racing vehicles of the late '60s and early '70s. The standard factory 22-inch wheels that the Ram 1500 R/T sits on have been replaced by 24-inch Vellano VRH custom wheels. In addition, King Suspension added new suspension that lowered the car by 2 inches and enhances handling, performance, and appearance. To add some contrast to the exterior coloring, the grille, hood vents, badging, fuel door, and the dual exhaust tailpipes are painted in gloss black.

Although the interior is based on the R/T, the Rumble Bee has its own unique features that give its interior a distinct look. It features black and drone yellow leather sport mesh seats stitched together by two-tone yellow and light grey thread. Emblazoned on the seats, floor mats, and door bolsters are "Rumble Bee" lettering and Ram logos. The center-piece features an amber-encased bee on the rotary shifter knob that lights up and showcases a honeycomb pattern. To add to the intimidation factor, there are two buttons below the knob that control the exhaust cutouts, allowing the exhaust to bypass the Mopar cat-back dual-exhaust system. The result is the full roar of a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8.

Beneath the hood of the Rumble Bee lays a 5.7-liter HEMI with 395 horsepower and 407 foot-pounds of torque partnered with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. Adding some styling to engine, the Rumble Bee features a gloss yellow and black engine cover with a honeycomb pattern. To add some kick, the Ram added a Mopar cold-air intake system that increases torque significantly and gives the Rumble Bee a quick jump off the line.

The Rumble Bee celebrates the heritage of Ram trucks and adds some spice to the pickup truck lineup. There was no better place to unveil this concept than the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit. The only thing to do now is wait and see if this concept sees the production line.

2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pack

Mopar is bringing the iconic Dodge Challenger muscle car to National Hot Road Association (NHRA) drag-racing competition. Mopar revealed two Dodge Challenger Drag Race Package Cars at the 29th Annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals today before thrilled fans at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo. Mopar Mile-High Nationals is the longest-running NHRA sponsorship.

“Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Judy “Miss Mighty Mopar” Lilly were behind the wheels for their inaugural track run. Garlits drove the car featuring the Stone White paint scheme. Lilly was behind the wheel of the “Mopar Liquid Metal” prototype. NHRA named Garlits the #1 driver of the Top 50 drivers from its first 50 years. His victories and accomplishments are virtually unmatched in drag-racing history. “Miss Mighty Mopar” is one of the female pioneers in drag racing. Spending 12 years on the NHRA circuit, Lilly is the only female driver to win two NHRA national events in one year.

Mopar built the first two Challenger Drag Race Package Cars for development and testing for its new Challenger Package Car program. Based on the Challenger SRT8®, the prototypes were finished in Stock Eliminator configuration. They ran successfully in June 2008 as proof-of-concept and for NHRA certification. Mopar dropped approximately 1,000 lbs. off the production Challenger SRT8 by eliminating major production components and systems. To accentuate the weight savings, they also feature added composite, polycarbonate and lightweight components designed for drag racing that will be part of the new Package Car program. The engine was repositioned to improve driveline angle and weight distribution. The 116-inch wheelbase was shortened by ½ inch. They also feature a front cradle with bolt-in crossmember and solid engine mounts.

“Today is a great day for Mopar, Dodge, SRT, drag racers and motorsports enthusiasts everywhere. Not made for the streets, our drag-race-only Challengers will be running soon in NHRA competition—the best grassroots racing series in the world,” said Sunil Lahoti, Mopar Marketing and Brand Manager, Chrysler LLC. “And who better to drive our new Challenger Package Cars on their inaugural track run than ‘Big Daddy’ and ‘Miss Mighty Mopar"—the greatest drag racer of all time and a female pioneer of the sport.”

New Dodge Challenger Drag Race Package Car Program by Mopar

The first drag-race, factory-prepped package cars built in 40 years, the new Challenger Drag Race Package Car by Mopar builds on the heritage of the limited-edition 1968 HEMI®-powered Package Cars. Those "68 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas solidified the Mopar brand as a quarter-mile force.

Mopar will build a minimum of 100 Challenger Drag Race Package Cars to meet NHRA requirements. Based on the production Dodge Challenger SRT8, Mopar’s modern factory-prepped Challenger Drag Race Package Car will begin as a special Body-in-White (BIW) from Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario, Canada, assembly plant. The body sealer, sound deadener and undercoat will be eliminated. To reduce vehicle weight, major production component and systems will also be eliminated including: windshield wiper assembly, complete HVAC system, all airbag components, rear seats, power steering system, exhaust system and underbody heat shields, cross-car and side impact door beams, rear bumper beam and rear deck lid spoiler.

The drag racer has three engine options—6.1-liter or 5.7-liter HEMI or 5.9-liter Magnum® Wedge—as well as manual or automatic transmission.

A build book/owner’s manual will be provided to document the modifications made to the Challenger SRT8 as well as provide recommendations to finish the Package Car for Stock Eliminator competition. To accentuate weight savings, there are unique drag-race components in the Package Car program including: composite lift-off hood with functional scoop, Viper-style front seats, polycarbonate door windows, lightweight cooling module with electric fan, manual rack and pinion steering, special cable-operated deck lid release, special lightweight front brake assembly and special cable-operated throttle linkage and pedal assembly.

The Challenger Drag Race Package Car will be eligible to run in three Eliminator categories—Comp, Super Stock and Stock—and potentially 40 classes.

Depending upon the configuration selected, the U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Challenger Drag Race Package Car program will range from the low to mid $30s. Each car will carry an identification plate with sequential serial number.

The Challenger Drag Race Package Car will be available for order in late August to early September. A toll-free number will be designated for ordering. Details will be posted on www.mopar.com.

2011 Dodge Challenger RT

The new 2011 Dodge Challenger delivers more of what muscle-car enthusiasts want — a more powerful and efficient engine lineup, maximum grip with an all-new performance suspension design and even more athletic styling — all executed with quality and precision.

“To deliver the most thrilling to drive Challenger lineup ever, Dodge upgraded the iconic coupe’s performance hardware for maximum precision and grip,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO — Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “From its lighter aluminum Pentastar V-6 engine with 305 standard horsepower, redesigned aluminum suspension geometry with aggressive negative camber for better cornering grip, improved feel and fade-resistant braking, to a near-balanced 50/50 weight distribution, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger has the hardware to compete.”

Improved Agility, High-speed Stability and Braking Performance
The new 2011 Dodge Challenger combines world-class ride, refinement and braking performance with more power and new track-tuned suspensions to deliver a thrilling driving experience.

Redesigned to handle the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine’s 305 horsepower (227 kW) — 55 more horsepower than the previous V-6 engine — the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE features a new road-gripping touring-tuned suspension with wider 18-inch wheels and tires for added control. In addition, a revised brake-pedal ratio and refined brake booster improve braking response and feel.

Upping the ante for 2011, the new Challenger Rallye with the Super Sport Group features an all-new performance-tuned suspension with larger performance-disc brakes, performance steering, larger and wider 20 x 8.0-inch aluminum chrome-clad wheels with new P245/45R20 Firestone Firehawk all-season performance tires for improved grip and a 3.06 rear-axle ratio for improved all around acceleration.

Challenger’s new second-generation rear-wheel-drive architecture delivers world-class ride and handling with any of its three available suspension tunings and high-performing wheel and tire combinations (in order of increased handling and braking performance):

Touring-tuned:
Standard on Dodge Challenger SE 18 x 7.5-inch aluminum wheels with P235/55R18 Michelin MXM4 all-season touring tiresÂ
Touring brake package

Performance-tuned:

20 x 8-inch aluminum wheels with P245/45R20 Firestone Firehawk all-season performance tires (available on R/T and Rallye with Super Sport Group)Â
Performance brake package

Super Track Pak:
Available on the Dodge Challenger R/T 20 x 8-inch aluminum wheels with P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 three-season performance tiresÂ
High-performance monotube shock absorbers and springsÂ
Performance brake package with high-performance brake liningsÂ
Three-mode electronic stability control (ESC) with “ESC-off” mode

New Second Generation E-segment Architecture Delivers Maximum GripÂ
With World-class Ride and Handling

Performance handling requires maximum grip, and the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE and R/T models feature redesigned front- and rear-suspension geometries with premium suspension hardware for world-class ride and handling.

At the heart of Dodge Challenger’s new suspension design are isolated, lightweight front- and rear-suspension cradles that create a rigid assembly needed for precise performance.

At the front cradle, new monotube front-shock absorbers, springs and a repositioned lower-front shock-to-suspension-link bushing deliver improved control, ride and comfort. Combined, these suspension components provide improved handling and durability, while reducing the harshness from road bumps compared with the previous Dodge Challenger. In addition, all-new front-suspension hydrobushings — a premium suspension component — reduce ride harshness and prolong smooth braking characteristics.

At the rear, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger’s five-link rear-suspension design features new roll-steer geometry, allowing independent control of camber and toe suspension movement for world-class handling. All-new monotube shock-absorbers and springs make the ride more refined, while improving handling and dynamics. Premium urethane jounce bumpers and suspension links with rubber shock absorber bushings help the Challenger’s rear suspension contribute to a quieter interior cabin. In addition, new upper and lower spring-seat isolators provide additional dampening to Challenger’s rear suspension to deliver smooth engagement over bumps.

A more aggressive front- and rear-camber geometry improve, the all-new Dodge Challenger’s road-holding capabilities. Set at -1.0 degrees in the front and -1.75 degrees in the rear, Dodge Challenger is set up for high-speed cornering with its tires leaning inboard at the top relative to the body. New larger diameter front- and rear-stabilizer bars keep the chassis nimble during cornering and make body lean a thing of the past.

Improved Performance Steering Feel With Energy SavingÂ
Electro-hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS)

An all-new electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system transmits precise road feel to the driver and improves on-center tracking and fuel economy.

Depending on the “control mode” within the EHPS system, the system applies variable steering effort to different driving conditions. EHPS analyzes steering angle, vehicle speed, engine rpm and chassis control systems 13 times per second for precise performance-handling feel. When the Dodge Challenger is stationary or moving at low speeds, the hydraulic pump increases power assistance for a lighter steering-wheel effort. The pump reduces steering assistance at highway speeds to give the performance coupe a firmer feel, and as a consequence, the system delivers a fuel savings of up to 1.5 percent by consuming less energy than a belt-driven pump.

All-new Pentastar V-6 Engine Delivers Added Efficiency and an Impressive 305 Horsepower
With its all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine producing 305 horsepower — 55 more horsepower than the engine it replaces — the new 2011 Dodge Challenger SE is the most powerful, refined and technologically advanced entry-level Challenger ever.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is an all-new design, featuring double-overhead camshafts (DOHC) with dual-independent cam phasers (DICP), integrated exhaust manifolds, polymer-coated piston skirts, forged connecting rods and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration. In addition, Dodge Challenger engineers added an all-new cold-air induction system and dual exhausts from the headers back to the exhaust tips for maximum output. The result is 305 track-ready horsepower (227 kW) at 6,350 rpm and a responsive 268 lb.-ft. (363 N•m) of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine’s torque exceeds 90 percent of its peak value from 1,800 to 6,400 rpm, which provides customers outstanding drivability and responsiveness.

Thanks to its all-aluminum design, the all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is 45 lbs. (20 kg) lighter than the previous V-6 engine and provides the new 2011 Dodge Challenger V-6 with a 52.4 / 47.6 front-to-rear weight distribution (compared with 53.5/46.5 previously) for improved balance and handling.

Refinement was a key objective for every component during the design phase of the engine and was achieved by using advanced computer-aided engineering techniques. Structural, intake and exhaust areas of the engine were designed to deliver low levels of overall sound and achieve specific audible quality goals that meet discerning customer requirements. Combined with the use of all-new premium hydraulic powertrain mounts, the all-new 2011 Dodge Challenger delivers refinement in all powertrain applications and RPMs.

Designed to be environmentally responsible, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine features lead-free engine construction and an environmentally-friendly oil filter system. The integrated oil cooler/filter system uses a filter element which can be incinerated, avoiding the land-fill burden of traditional filter systems. The use of long-life spark plugs and a high-energy coil-on-plug ignition system maximizes component life and helps reduce cost of ownership.

The all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is manufactured at Chrysler Group LLC’s Trenton South Engine Plant in Trenton, Mich.

New Challenger R/T Features up to 376 Horsepower With Four-cylinder Mode Efficiency
For the performance enthusiast, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T with its the legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine delivers up to 376 horsepower (280 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 N•m).

When paired with the newly refined Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission’s Track Pak the 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T delivers smoother shifts, while delivering even more power through unique performance-tuned dual exhaust and under-floor mufflers with low-restriction bottle resonators. The result is 376 track-tearing horsepower that can accelerate the performance coupe from 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds and a sinister exhaust growl for the cars left in its rear-view mirror.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T’s 5.7-liter HEMI engine with five-speed automatic transmission produces 372 horsepower (277 kW) and 400 lb.-ft. of torque (542 N•m), plus its FuelSaver technology seamlessly transitions to high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when full V-8 power is not required, without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine also features variable-valve timing (VVT) to improve fuel economy in two ways. First, it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more work to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost out of the exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.

Updated Exterior Enhancements Improve Form and Function
To match its unmistakable muscle-car styling, upgraded powertrain and improved handling capabilities, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger features performance-driven exterior enhancements.

At the front of the new Dodge Challenger’s wide stance is a restyled trapezoidal front air dam with a larger opening to cool the legendary HEMI V-8 or potent Pentastar V-6 engine. Providing additional downforce is a larger “duck bill” front spoiler in black to match the coupe’s lower sill.

Larger 18-inch aluminum wheels are now standard equipment on the Dodge Challenger and provide a more athletic stance with wider tires. For added style and performance handling, the Dodge Challenger SE with the new Rallye package now offers the all-new Super Sport Group, providing new five-spoke 20 x 8-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels and even wider low-profile tires. For a touch of nostalgia, Challenger’s iconic bright racing-style fuel-filler door is now standard on all models.

Topping off the new Dodge Challenger SE and the new Challenger Rallye’s good looks are dual-chromed exhaust tips integrated into the lower rear fascia.

Upgraded Race-inspired Interior With More Standard Equipment
The interior equipment in the new 2011 Dodge Challenger is significantly upgraded to give customers added style, convenience, value and best-in-class accommodations.

Transmitting Challenger’s new precision steering and feel of the road is an all-new thick-rimmed three-spoke Dodge steering wheel for better performance feel and grip. The right-sized hand-stitched, leather-wrapped steering wheel features silver metallic painted spokes located at the 3-, 6- and 9 o’clock positions. The new sport steering wheel features back-lit cruise, Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) and available Uconnect® Voice Command controls mounted on the front face, which makes it easier to see at night.

Dodge Challenger’s trapezoidal race-inspired instrument panel now features a new four-bomb gauge cluster with chromed accent rings and new sport-themed graphics. Inside the cluster, a new four-line display EVIC is now standard equipment and shows the driver trip and multimedia information from the Media Center radio.

To make long cruises more comfortable, the new 2011 Dodge Challenger features redesigned seat structures with improved cushioning and more comfortable contours. Challenger’s standard power driver’s seat now features power lumbar for improved back support. To make it easier to get in and out of the backseat, the driver’s seat now features seatback tilt- with memory and an easy-to-reach release handle, while the front-passenger seat adds tilt-and-slide with memory, which makes it even easier to use. When equipped with leather, Dodge Challenger’s new Nappa leather seating surfaces provide a premium look and feel.

Dodge Challenger offers exceptional rear seating for a two-door coupe, achieving best-in-class rear head room (37.4 inches) and legroom (32.6 inches) room compared with its competition. With class-exclusive seating for five, coupled with best-in-class cargo space (16.2 cu. ft.), the new 2011 Dodge Challenger is the segments best day-to-day pony-car choice, offering maximum comfort and functionality.

Next to Dodge Challenger’s LED-illuminated cupholders, a new hand-stitched leather-wrapped shift knob is now standard and provides improved feel while toggling between the coupe’s standard Auto Stick transmission gears.

Finishing the Dodge Challenger’s interior upgrade is the addition of standard automatic climate control for added convenience and improved comfort.

Hurst Performance Vehicles, one of the most recognized and revered names in automobile history, kicked off its highly-anticipated Competition/PLUS series with the Hurst Competition/PLUS Challenger at the NHRA Museum’s Twilight Cruise Wednesday, July 1, 2009.

Hurst’s Competition/PLUS series pays homage to Hurst’s most popular and best-selling shifter of the same namesake. Over the past several decades, Hurst has sold approximately one million of these iconic Competition/Plus shifters.

Set to continue the brand’s long standing tradition of building some of the most sought-after collectible muscle cars, these numbered cars will be available based on both the R/T 5.7 Hemi or the 6.1 SRT8 Hemi. A variety of legendary color combinations including red, blue, white and silver will be available, all complete with matte black Hurst graphics and color-keyed, Hurst leather interiors.

The Competition/PLUS Challenger will also come with a traditional white, Hurst round-ball shift knob. An extra black shift knob will come in every car’s glove box, so that customer’s may choose which they like best.

“The Competition/PLUS is the newest series to expand the availability of Hurst cars through our authorized dealer network,” said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst Performance. “The Hurst Competition/PLUS shifter is easily the most successful shifter in the history of racing and automotive performance. We’re proud to name our new series of limited edition vehicles after Hurst’s most famous product.”

2003 Dodge Tomahawk Concept

Life just got more extreme. Much more extreme.

The Viper-powered Dodge Tomahawk concept vehicle shatters all the barriers of conventional thinking about personal transportation. This four-wheel, single-passenger vehicle is a sleek, rolling sculpture that combines art-deco styling with extreme engineering.

The 500-horsepower Viper V-10 engine powering the dual rear wheels gives this radical vehicle a potential top speed of nearly 400 miles per hour - for anyone who wants to test it. The Tomahawk roared into public view at the 2003 North American International Auto Show.

"The Dodge brand philosophy always challenges us to grab life by the horns," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Design, Chrysler Group. "In the case of Tomahawk, grabbing and holding onto anything for dear life is a necessity. It's just that extreme and passionate; a glimpse into the soul and commitment of true enthusiasts."

Initial reaction to the concept vehicle typically comes in two words: "Wow" and "why."

The "wow" is easy to understand from Dodge, the brand that continues to drive its foot to the floor - most recently with the all-new 2003 Viper, Heavy Duty and Light Duty Rams and an SRT lineup dedicated to engineering the most powerful production vehicles in their segments. But "why" would a company, famous for its innovative car and truck designs, go down this particular path? "Tomahawk is an icon of the extreme thinking for a brand that is known not only for the legendary Viper and Ram, but also for all new, innovative vehicles such as the Magnum SRT-8 and Durango concepts," said Creed.

That extreme thinking produced a machine in the true tradition of power-junkie passion, powered by a 505 cu. in., 8300 cc aluminum Viper V-10 engine.

"This is a bold faced slap against mediocrity," Creed said. "Tomahawk is a scintillating example of what creative minds can do when given the opportunity to run free. It is a pure mechanical sculpture and a joyous celebration of the artistry and emotion of design."

The Dodge Tomahawk is a Chrysler Group design concept that is as much a Viper-powered work of art as it is a whole new type of vehicle invention. It is both a sculpture that can be ridden, as well as a bold statement about the Chrysler Group's enthusiast culture and passion for design.

"Tomahawk moves design concept introductions and the concept car game to a whole new level - as only Dodge and the Chrysler Group can," said Creed.

2014 SRT Viper Increases Options

The 2014 SRT Viper will come with an updated entertainment and audio system, which adds another $2,000 to the base price. The 2014 Viper now has a base price of $99,395 not including the $2,600 gas guzzler tax or $1,995 destination charge.

Changes to the new Viper include HD radio, navigation, Uconnect services, and Harman Kardon audio as standard. The new entertainment features are controlled by the existing 8.4 inch touchscreen in the SRT Viper. Uconnect features allow voice control and integration of the systems. Voice commands can load up navigation destinations, control media playback, and even read and reply to text messages. The car also has a back-up camera which displays onto the screen.

The audio system developed by Harman Kardon, which was an optional extra for the 2013 model, now comes standard on the 2014 SRT Viper. The system features a 12 speaker layout, including two subwoofers. The standard system is rated at 900 watts, and buyers can opt in for an even higher package if they want. The highest spec Harman Kardon system in the Viper has a deafening 18 speaker layout, with four subwoofers. The optional 18 speaker system now costs $1,995, a thousand dollars less than before.

No changes have been made to the 8.4 liter, 640 horsepower V10. Performance of the 2014 Viper remains the same. The Viper GTS with two mode adjustable suspension remains at $121,895. Pricing has not yet been announced regarding the Viper TA (Time Attack), the lightened track oriented Viper, but the price will probably be somewhere in between the standard model and the GTS.

Other options, such as paint and stripe designs, remain as they were. The more expensive Viper GTS has more choices for options than the standard model, with a wider array of seats and wheels to pick from.

2013 Dodge SRT Viper GTS

When the Viper first came to us in the early 1990s, it could tear the lungs out of a contemporary Corvette and was a nicer car to look at than just about anything being produced in the United States at the time. With its ten-cylinder truck engine, side-pipes that would burn you if you weren't careful, and minimal use of creature comforts or driver aids meant that the Viper was always a wild car, not to mention a world class performer that made buying a C4 Corvette look daft. Eventually, though, General Motors caught on and gave the Viper a run for its money with the Corvette Z06. The Viper then lost some of its cachet and, in the summer of 2010, production of Chrysler's flagship sports car ceased.
But it wasn't too long before another Viper was in the works, and at the New York Auto Show in 2012, the newest version was unveiled. No longer branded as a Dodge, the Viper from now on is to be known as the SRT Viper. It still very much looks the part with styling that clearly takes it all back to the old GTS of the 1990s with the double bubble roof and curves in all the right places, rather than the more angular appearance of the third and fourth generation Vipers. The rest of the car is actually quite familiar as well, and that's probably a good thing. The V-10 engine is still comically large at 8.4 liters, the wheelbase is still the same and the car still rides on basically the same steel frame as it did a couple of years ago. The new Viper, then, is not a completely new take on the old serpentine sports car, but the general improvement of a machine that never should have gone away in the first place. In 2013 terms, the Viper isn't as bonkers as it was the first time around, but it still puts up highly impressive numbers. That trademark ten-cylinder motor makes 640 horsepower and 600 lb/ft of torque and drives through a six-speed Tremec gearbox, a move that has surely left advocates of the classic manual gearbox relieved. Sixty will come in less than 3.5 seconds and a competent driver should be able to do 12 second quarter miles in it with ease. With some other clever moves like cocking the engine towards the passenger side to improve weight distribution and increasing stiffness with an underhood X-brace, the SRT Viper should also be just as exciting around the track as it is in a straight line.
Inside, the Viper of old was refreshingly spartan, but for the new car an extra trim level is offered called the GTS, which gets you more leather and goodies options for the interior as well as a new two-mode suspension system and more settings for the standard stability control, offered for the first time on a Viper because of a new law. These extras will cost you, though, as the GTS starts at $125,000, over $20,000 more than the standard car. But the standard car is more of a track day machine, and for people looking for a twenty-first century Viper that's at home in two worlds, the GTS is it.
