Hyundai Azera

Little by little, Hyundai has started to make cars that people might actually want to buy. No longer is the Korean brand the butt of jokes and no longer is it a brand for people who don’t care anything at all about cars, driving, or build quality. Even in the luxury sedan segments, they’re confidently taking on the established names by offering decent looks, luxury, and incredible value. It really does seem that people are finally coming around to a brand that used to be seen as the poor man’s Honda, and it’s not for lack of effort on Hyundai’s part. They’re keeping pace in the ever-changing car world by offering direct-injection on many of their engines, advanced technology and connectivity in their interiors, and current if not exactly original styling on their exteriors. Slated conveniently between the Sonata and the Genesis, the new Azera is an impressive product of Hyundai’s rise, and one that might just have some drivers leaving their Lexus behind.
Hyundai claims the styling of the new Azera has been inspired by “the mechanics of flight”, but in all honesty it hardly stands out from the other midsize sedans it competes against. The lines of the rear quarter panels and the third windows at the back are nice touches and the Azera is overall a handsome car (especially compared to Hyundais of the past), but it’s a relatively safe design in the end.

The available Technology Package, which our test car was equipped with, runs about $4,000 and on the outside gets you Xenon headlights and 19-inch “Hyper Silver” alloy wheels instead of the standard 18-inch ones. This is noticeable, but doesn’t make for a huge difference. What really sets the Technology Package apart is what’s on the inside.
For the interior, that $4,000 bundle of options gets you a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats with cushion extenders, a rear parking sensor, the 12-speaker Infinity sound system, a power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades. As far as standard features, you get a cooled glove box, a navigation system linked to a 7-inch touch screen and a rear view camera, Bluetooth with voice recognition, and Hyundai’s Blue Link, a connectivity system not unlike the MyLink found in GM vehicles. Heated front and rear leather seats are also standard, and Hyundai boasts best-in-class front head and leg room. This feels very much like a premium luxury car, and seeing that “H” on the steering wheel of such an expensive-looking space comes as a bit of a shock to the system. With the Technology Package, you have just about every bell and whistle you could wish for short of a chauffeur, and even though it brings the price to a little over $37,000, it’s still not a bad deal at all.

Compared to the engines of its rivals, the Azera’s is on the small side, but it actually makes more power than just about all except for the V-6 Buick LaCrosse and still achieves an EPA estimated 23 combined miles per gallon. The all-aluminum 3.3 liter direct-injected V-6 makes 293 horsepower, an impressive 88.8 horsepower per liter, and 255 lb/ft of torque thanks to higher compression (11.5:1), four valves per cylinder, continuously variable valve timing, and a three-stage variable intake system. The engine also has an “Active Eco” mode, which supposedly improves fuel economy by 5%, and it all runs through a six-speed automatic gearbox built in-house that puts power to the front wheels. Taking one more step back and reminding yourself that this is a Hyundai makes you realize that the level of engineering under the hood is just as surprising as the fit and finish of the interior. And the Azera is refreshingly light as well to give it a slight edge in fuel economy and performance. It weighs in at just 3,600 pounds, 200 lighter than a LaCrosse and 400 lighter than a Taurus. With the Azera, picking the Hyundai doesn’t mean you’re just getting the blandest, cheapest option but a real contender. Cars like this are the reason the company is doing so well.
On the road, the Azera was as expected, with chassis dynamics that are well within the requirements of the average driver. As in, operate the car as a nice, practical daily utility and you’ll likely never notice (or need) the performance on tap. Ask something courageous of it, however, and enthusiasts will quickly notice that’s not what the Azera is all about. It’s better suited to pulling down highway miles than carving up the secondary roads. Hyundai plays it safe and that’s okay.
What Hyundai has done here is overdeliver and undercharge. They’ve given it a price tag that will get people’s attention, then load it up with technology and luxuries that midsize sedan buyers really go for. With the combination of looks, luxury, value and reassuring warranty, it’s a bargain. If you’re a driving enthusiast, then get a 3-series BMW, but if that’s not what you want from a midsize sedan, then it might be worth taking a step outside the comfort zone of a Lexus or Buick and into this up-and-comer, the Hyundai Azera.

2010 Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai PM580

In the world of racing, Unlimited, means "Anything Goes." Unlike other forms of motorsport (NASCAR, Indy Car, F1, etc.) the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Unlimited Class gives teams the freedom to create any kind of race car they want to conquer the mountain without restrictions on tires, weight and horsepower. Teams can make their cars as light as possible, with an unlimited amount of horsepower and with whatever braking, drivetrain or suspension package they desire.

With this in mind, Rhys Millen Racing is fabricating a modern Le Mans style car with a target weight of 1,850 pounds powered by a 4.1-liter Hyundai Lambda turbocharged V6 engine. The team feels to have a competitive power-to-weight ratio, the car will need to produce 675 horsepower. Current engine testing shows the engine is capable of producing 750 horsepower, which is more than needed to tackle the mountain.

The car will feature a carbon fiber aerodynamic body with an active rear wing. The wing will create less drag in the straight-aways and more stability in cornering and braking. Active wings are outlawed in other forms of racing."We are building a car for today's road," said Millen "The car will have a sleek aerodynamic body, the grip of Toyo Proxy tires and the power and durability of a Hyundai engine. This is the package I need to break the record."

The RMR Hyundai Genesis PM580 will use an active center differential. This differential will allow a 10 to 100 percent torque split to the front wheels. This is important because the course changes from asphalt to dirt multiple times and allows the Genesis PM580 to have more than one set up on the 12.42-mile course. The car will be ideal on the mixed surface at Pikes Peak. The Genesis PM580 address a fundamental reason on perhaps why the 10-minute record has not fallen. Most race cars do not work well on both dirt and asphalt.

2014 Hyundai Elantra and Avante facelift unveiled

Hyundai, South Korea’s largest automaker, today officially launched the facelifted Elantra in the Korean market. Aiming to further strengthen its presence in one of the world’s most competitive segments, the updated Elantra incorporates a refreshed design and improved product features.

The facelifted Elantra, badged as Avante in the Korean market, has an overall length of 4,550 mm, which is 20mm longer than the previous model, while its wheelbase remains the same. With front and rear bumpers extended by 5mm and 15mm, respectively, the facelifted Elantra projects a more stable, balanced look. The newly-designed front bumper, radiator grille, fog lamps as well as adoption of LED light guide and projection headlamps add a dynamic, high-tech feel to the Elantra. When seen from the side, the redesigned 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels and chrome belt line moulding accentuate the Elantra’s premium image. A new black, two-tone rear bumper and LED rear combination lamps were also adopted.

Interior design elements were modified with the aim of improving usability, reflecting feedback from customers of the previous Elantra model. The centre air vent position was moved upward on the dash, while the front centre armrest position was also raised. Rear seat air vent, 3.5 inch OLED display and ventilation seats were also introduced. The facelifted Elantra also comes equipped with high-tech convenience features such as advanced SPAS (Smart Parking Assist System) and flex steer.

A diesel engine variant was added to the model line-up, responding to the growing popularity of diesel fuel in the Korean market. Equipped with a 1.6 litre diesel engine, the facelifted Elantra delivers fuel economy of 5.4 l/100kms (MT) and 6.2l/100kms (AT), while delivering maximum power of 94 kW and maximum torque of 279 Nm (AT). Moreover, Hyundai Motor’s advanced ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system is adopted on the automatic diesel variant.

The facelifted Elantra is due to go on sale locally in the fourth quarter 2013.

Hyundai is working on a BMW 3 Series rival

The South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has started to make some beautiful and efficient cars. According to a recent report, the Asian car maker is working on a rear wheel drive sedan to compete against the BMW 3-Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Our colleagues from Automotive News said that the new model has the RK name code and could be launched in 2016. The upcoming Hyundai model will be heavily inspired by the HCD-14 Concept and it will be larger than the actual BME 3 Series.
According to the same report, under the hood, the new Hyundai rear wheel sedan could have a turbocharged 2.0 liter or a V6 3.3 liter unit. The four cylinder engine is developing 274 horsepower and 373 Nm peek of torque and is used on the Genesis Coupe, while the 3.3 liter V6 unit can develop 293 HP and 345 Nm peek of torque when it’s installed on the Azera.

Hyundai Veloster Zombie Survival Machine

At the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, Hyundai came along prepared, very prepared, with a zombie-proof version of the Hyundai Veloster. Called rather appropriatley the Hyundai Veloster Zombie Survival Machine, the concept is equipped with all the tools required to fend of marauding zombie hordes.
The concept features an array of weaponry, including a roof-mounted machine gun, as well as flamethrowers, chainsaws, and baseball bats. The interior has storage for ammo, even more weapons, and a first-aid kit. The Veloster Zombie Survival Machine also has a roof-mounted PA system equipped with something called a “doom whistle”?.. yeah me neither.

Of course all the weaponry in the world isn’t going to save you from zombies if you don’t have some decent armor. So Hyundai have covered the car in some custom made thick metal plating, and added window bars to protect the occupants from the un-dead when they get up close and personal.

The Hyundai Veloster Zombie Survival Machine was built by Galpin Auto Sports in collaboration with Hyundai and Robert Kirkman, the creator and writer of The Walking Dead.
There’s no word yet whether Hyundai will offer any of the Zombie Survival Machine’s accessories through its dealerships.
It’s probably a no though.

2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe

There are more differences underneath that contribute to the coupes sporty handling. Hyundai engineers gave the new coupe a V-beam rear suspension, instead of the torsion beam found on the sedan. This helps give the two-door a firmer ride that helps reduce body roll in the corners. The Elantra Coupe also comes with larger 17-inch wheels that contribute to the sportier treatment and feel on the road.
The ride in the coupe is much firmer than the sedan and for those looking for a luxury ride may be disappointed. The coupe is built for performance and fun on the road. Although it’s not a powerhouse, the coupe has enough pep for driving enthusiasts. For those looking for more power, there is the Genesis Coupe or the Veloster Turbo. But the Elantra Coupe has a sporty feel and won’t eat you alive at the gas pump. The EPA estimated fuel mileage is 27/37 city/highway with the automatic transmission which is good for a sports car. The manual transmission gets a one mile bump.

The 1.8-liter engine with 6-spd automatic is a good match

The Elantra Coupe is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 145 horsepower and 130 lb ft of torque. It comes mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. It comes with a front-wheel-drive configuration and is relatively light at around 2,700 pounds. On the road, we noticed some road noise that is fairly typical in the compact car segment. The four-cylinder engine had plenty of power going up I-70 at altitude and for passing. This testers six-speed automatic with Shiftronic was smooth and had seamless shifts throughout the power range.

Ample head and legroom up front

The only issue we found with the Elantra Coupe was the lack of space in the back seat. The coupe does suffer from a lack of rear headroom due to the steeper rake of their roofline. The backseat will be more comfortable for smaller children and can be used to carry cargo. Average size adults will feel the tops of their heads rubbing against the volcanic-infused headliner. But up front, the driver and passenger have plenty of room and there is ample head and legroom. The interior is well-appointed and even though plastic is used on most surfaces, it is attractive and well-executed.

Plenty of standard interior features

The 2013 Elantra Coupe comes standard with many features like a six-way manual driver’s seat, manually operated air conditioning, cruise control, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker audio system with CD player, satellite radio capability and iPod/USB port; 60/40-split folding rear seat, power windows, locks and heated mirrors, tilt steering wheel, keyless entry, and anti-theft system.

Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai Genesis Coupe Drift Car هونداي دريفت

With the new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, South Korean automaker Hyundai has made no secret of the fact that they are gunning for the sport compact car tuning market. Using language like "a high-performance blank canvas for tuners" and shelling out big bucks for Superbowl advertising, Hyundai has spent a pretty penny creating an aura of performance and mystique around the new Genesis Coupe.

As a technology showpiece for the new Genesis Coupe, Hyundai has commissioned Rhys Millen Racing, known the world over for their multiple drift and Pike's Peak Hill Climb victories, to shape the V6 Genesis Coupe into a 550 horsepower, turbocharged drift-ready beast.

The Rhys Mllen Racing Genesis Coupe Drift Car, co-sponsored by Red Bull, is no mere set of bolt-ons for the Genesis, rather a completely reengineered race car set to compete in the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship, the Hill Climb, and Redline Time Attack series events.

Stripped down to chassis, the Rhys Millen Genesis Coupe is rebuilt entirely in carbon fiber body panels while retaining its tuner car lines, and gaining a huge rear spoiler and some fancy aerodynamic hardware.

The motor gets bored and stroked out to 4.1 liters, gaining a Turbonetics turbocharging system for its stellar 550 hp output with 525 lb-ft. of torque. Mated to an HKS sequential manual tranny, the Rhys Millen Genesis is ready to light up race tracks all over the world, sideways.

Riding on 265/40-18 Toyo Proxes R1R's out back and 225/40-18 in the front, Rhys Millen and Hyundai have set a target weight of 2400 lbs. curb. If they can stick under this number, the Genesis Coupe drift car will be pushing some serious performance potential.

Very nice, Hyundai. Fresh off the Motor Trend Car of the Year award for the 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan, it looks like they have another winner on their hands with the tuner ready I4 and V6 Coupes.
