2012 BBM Volkswagen Golf ..Yes Auto

Basically everything about VW-Golf in all its facets was said and written, finally even an extremely popular car class was named after it. But what happens with different Golfs when they leave the plant has something to think about in each case. So, for example, BBM Motorsport Company located in the city of Senden in the area of Coesfeld / Münsterland, where the Chip tuning is on top of the To-do-List.

In the following case Golf with 211 Series-HP or 280 Nm of torsion torque was optimized through a software improvement beginning from the turbo new installed exhaust system. The figures now are the following 275 HP or 380 Nm. The necessary tuning has been done on the BBM-Dynojet-power testing station “Leistungsloch.de”. For this power not surprising is installed a StopTech braking system, here four piston alloy monobloc calipers that are colored in the rim color are firmly biting themselves into the discs of the rear axle with dimensiona of 355x32 mm.

For the installation of the KW Club sport-chassis with setup for the Northloop (Nuerburgring) in cooperation with chassis-specialist Bernd Szafranski (former workshop manager of H&R suspension systems who operates only as KW Performance contact in the House BBM Motorsport) company MR Car Design from Erftstadt is responsible. The above-mentioned stainless steel exhaust system with turbo charge by 200 Rennkat including 10 years of warranty, as well as one-off production service provided to Golf VI R-Heck arises from MR Car Design, as the proper product line REIL Performance.

From Wheels company originate Cornich Challenge rims with 8,5x20 inches ET45 and 5x112-LK with 235/30R20 tires. The real carbon-coated parts such as hood and mirror caps, the VW-logo, the rear diffuser and the side steps are the input of company blackgold designs for this project.

The car wrapping tools were created in matt blue metallic foil, the sticker bombing of the fender and the orange colored ornament by the CFC-Styling station in Neuss with Marius Kadjer responsible for tuned in and this gave the Golf the actual BBM work recognition factor.

2012 BBM Volkswagen Golf V GTI ..Yes Auto

The qualified real estate agent Andrea FRIEDRICH, born in 1989, can really present achievements even for her still quite young age. In addition to the titles Miss Yamaha 2012 and Monster Energy Girl she has now dared to get started in the motorsport. In order to take part at racing events such as VLN, GLP and the like, the 23-year-old has obtained her A-license at the Rennfahrer-Schule.com under the guidance of Michael HOLZ and Peter BONK from Bonk Motorsport.

Andrea drives a Golf V GTI 2.0 TFSI in the Club Sport trim by BBM Motorsport. The tuner from Senden in the southwest of Munster optimized the series values of the GTI from 200 hp and 280 Nm up to steady 336 hp and 460 Nm torque. This was implemented by the BBM professionals with the rebuilding on Audi S3 technology including K04 turbocharger and the coordination at the in-house Dynojet dynamometer. Even the from Turbo mounted exhaust system by Supersprint contributes not insignificantly to the improved performance. Also there is a big double-DIN charge air cooler and a sport clutch by ZF / Sachs Motorsport installed.

With regard to the wheel-tire combination the TEC-rims by ASA in the dimension of 8x18 ET35 with semi-slick tires in 225/40-18 are to be mentioned with praise. Also the KW Club Sport coilover with adjustable strut bearings ensures thanks to BBM a significant contribution to the optimal driving dynamics of the Golf GTI by Volkswagen. For the indispensable curbing of the powers, a Stoptech brake system with massive discs in the size of 355 x 32 mm and 4-Piston Calipers is available. For reasons of safety there is a safety cage made by Wiechers in the inside of the racing trimmed Golf GTI. Belts, seats and several details are of course adapted accordingly. In conclusion the racer is wrapped in a mat baby blue foil by Bruxsafol, professionally applied by Jaded Design.http://yesauto.blogspot.com/

The price for this rebuild is at 19.500 euros plus installation. Andrea and her Golf can also score with impressive values: Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 275 km/h, all in all with a weight of 1,270 kg. Volkswagen Golf R unveiled ahead of IAA Frankfurt debut

Volkswagen has released the first details of its new Golf R, which is set to take to the stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.  With a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 300 PS and 380 Nm (280 lbs ft), and transferring its power to the road via the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, the new Golf R is the fastest-accelerating production Golf yet, with a zero to 62 mph time of just 5.3 seconds (compared with 5.7 seconds for the previous model), or 4.9 seconds when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox.  Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The new Golf R isn’t just faster, either: with combined fuel consumption of 39.8 mpg* (40.9 mpg* for the DSG version), and CO2 emissions as low as 159 g/km it is up to 18 per cent more efficient than its predecessor.

At the heart of the R is a newly developed version of the EA888 TSI engine used in the latest Golf GTI, but in this application producing 300 PS.  Compared with the GTI’s powerplant, the Golf R’s engine has a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.

The Golf R’s four-wheel drive is the latest fifth-generation Haldex system.  Under low loads or when coasting, the rear axle is decoupled, helping to reduce fuel consumption.  It takes only fractions of a second for drive to the rear axle to be engaged via the Haldex coupling, which is actuated by an electro-hydraulic pump.  If necessary, almost 100 per cent of power can be transferred to the rear axle.

The Golf R rides on specially tuned springs and dampers, with a ride height that’s 20 mm lower than that of the standard Golf (and 5 mm lower than that of the GTI).  Adaptive Chassis Control will be available as an option.  Like the GTI and GTD, the Golf R is equipped with progressive steering, which reduces the number of turns lock to lock to just 2.1, rather than 2.75, making for an enhanced dynamic driving experience.

Visually, the Golf R is distinguished by its new front bumper design, with large air inlets, modified radiator grille with ‘R’ logo and newly developed daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights.  At the side, there are bespoke body-colour sills, while behind the standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres are black-painted brake calipers with ‘R’ logos.  The brakes themselves are all ventilated discs: 30 mm by 340 mm at the front and 22 mm by 310 mm at the rear.  At the rear, there are smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes – two at either side.

The interior features sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke for the R, and include typical touches such as blue needles.

Volkswagen Design Vision GTI Concept

Volkswagen today published some sketches of a super high-performance VW Golf GTI-based concept car which they will be showing off at this year’s Worthersee gathering in Austria where Audi/Volkswagen/Skoda fans get together to talk shop.
The Volkswagen Design Vision GTI concept is the most potent Golf-based vehicle since 2007, when Volkswagen introduced the GTI W12 650 concept, again at Worthersee. The Design Vision GTI is based on the recently-launched 7th generation Golf GTI, however the car has had so many modifications it’s virtually an all-new car. It’s longer, lower and wider than a standard GTI, while also having a longer wheelbase, wider track both front and rear, and shorter overhangs.

The bodywork has also undergone a fairly obvious metamorphosis, changing the typically restrained GTI’s character into something much more head turning. The wheelarches are now so pronounced that the rear arches are literally popping off the car, allowing air to be channeled between the c-pillar and the rear side windows. Both front and rear bumpers have been changed for more aggressive units incorporating lots of carbon fiber elements.
On the inside the Volkswagen Design Vision GTI Concept gets a simplified and pared-back theme. Volkswagen’s Head of Interior Design, Tomasz Bachorski said he wanted: “Pure GTI.  Concentration on the truly essential.  But with style.” Reflecting this desire, the interior features the minimum number of switches necessary, and those which there are have been angled towards the driver for optimum use when driving on the track.  A familiar black, red and white color scheme, touches of carbon and alcantara as well as a door handle in the shape of a red loop (reminiscent of that in Porsche Cup models) add to the race car feel.  The back seat space is occupied by an X-shaped cross member, adding to the car’s overall stiffness.  Two black helmets are stored under the cross member. Additional features of the interior include a built-in dash cam, and a system which allows the driver to use social media from inside the car – because as we all know its perfectly safe to update your facebook status while driving…
And finally we come to the heart of the car. Powering the Volkswagen Vision GTI Concept is a turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 with direct injection. This engine produces 496 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm and 560 Nm of torque between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. Power is sent to all-four wheels with the help of a DSG gearbox. The top speed hasn’t been announced, but it can scoot to 62 mph (100km/h) in just 3.9 seconds.
No you can’t buy it.

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco R

Designed, engineered and developed by Volkswagen Individual, the Scirocco R is not only the most powerful and fastest accelerating Scirocco ever produced but also the most focussed R model yet. At its heart is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder EA113 engine (as opposed to the EA888 fitted to the conventional Scirocco) in heavily revised form. The block has been reinforced with an entirely new alloy head, uprated pistons, conrods and high pressure injectors. An uprated Turbocharger generating 1.2 bar of boost is joined by a new intercooler to cope with the extra heat generated. The result is 265 PS and 258 lbs ft of torque - a rise of 65 PS and 51 lbs ft over the Scirocco's current 2.0-litre TSI engine.

Drive is channelled through the front wheels via a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. Ensuring greater grip in all conditions, especially on tight corners, is XDS (first seen on the new Golf GTI) an electronic cross-axle traction control system. As with the rest of the Scirocco range, the Scirocco R is fitted with Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC). This allows the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for the conditions and journey. The braking system has also been uprated with larger discs and callipers, the latter finished in gloss black.

The mechanical changes to the Scirocco R are joined by a purposeful new look. The new front bumper, featuring a set of LED running lights, is dominated by a trio of deep airdams while the Xenon lights, fitted as standard, frame a new gloss black grille element set into which is a single 'R' badge. Further back, the mirrors are capped in gloss black while the rubbing strips which run down either side of the standard Scirocco have been removed to be replaced by a set of body-coloured side skirts.

The rear of the Scirocco R features smoked rear light lenses and a new, rear spoiler along with a prominent diffuser finished in gloss black mounted between a pair of new oval tailpipes. The Scirocco badge and engine designation are both deleted in favour of the Volkswagen badge and a single 'R' logo. Completing the changes are a set of 18-inch five-spoke wheels with 19-inch versions available as an option.

The uprated look continues inside the Scirocco R. The main contact points are new sports seats complete with 'R' logos are joined by a gloss black finish on the centre console, vents and door cards replacing the silver highlights found on the standard car. A new three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in black leather with contrasting white stitching sits in front of new white backlit dials complete with blue needles unique to the 'R' models. As standard the Scirocco R will be fitted with a touchscreen CD stereo, 2Zone climate control, six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme.

2006 Volkswagen Iroc Concept

Comeback of a successful idea: At the 1973 international Motor Show in Geneva Volkswagen presented a sensational coupé. It was compact, distinctive, agile, spacious and affordable. Volkswagen called it the Scirocco. The car struck the nerve of the times: More than half a million first generation Sciroccos were produced worldwide. Turning point: In August 2006 the largest car maker in Europe showed the reinterpretation of the successful Scirocco idea in a world premiere – the Iroc concept.

New VW sports car design:

Like the first Scirocco with its visual straightforwardness the Iroc also marks a stylistic turning point through its progressively designed radiator grill and a distinctive sensuality of forms. The concept of both Volkswagens is closely related, even though the vehicles are separated by over three decades: The first generation Scirocco was an attainable dream car for many people. Because the Scirocco was an automotive superstar of the 70’s, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and equipped with four full-fledged seats, a proper trunk, large hatchback and a lot of self-esteem. The Iroc concept takes up this fascinating idea again.

Purebred sports car instead of a classic coupé:

However, in contrast to the original Scirocco the Iroc is no classic coupé, but a progressively designed sports car with an extremely long roof and a comparatively steep rear end. This has two advantages. Firstly: The Iroc features sharp proportions. Especially when viewed from behind it becomes immediately apparent that this long roof together with side window sections is situated on very broad and powerful shoulders. The Iroc thus achieves a waist of flawless sports car theory. Secondly: The Iroc also has room in back for two adults and ample luggage. On balance the provocatively designed Iroc combines a high degree of suitability for daily use, pure driving fun and expressive design into a Volkswagen that as a possible series-production vehicle will also be very attractively positioned in terms of price.

Viper green meets dark carbon:

The Iroc concept exhibits numerous subtleties in detail. Paint example: Although anything but retro styled, the green used is an homage to the first generation Scirocco for which this exact shade of color was especially typical starting with the 1976 model. Then as now it’s called “viper green metallic”. This glaring green of the Iroc is especially effective in combination with the high contrast black shades of the concept. Carbon example: The central roof element is composed of dark tinted glass; this element is supported by a structure covered with carbon. An integrated lengthwise support is also a part of these materials. The side sills of the Iroc also have a carbon surface. The structure of the sill visible from outside continues seamlessly into the interior.

Sexy dimensions:

With its short overhangs the Iroc efficiently utilizes a wheelbase of 2,680 mm for the space provided inside. The concept is 1,400 mm high, 4,240 mm long and 1,800 mm wide. The light-alloy rims specially designed for the Iroc and 235 tires are implemented in 19 inch size.

Twincharger and DSG:

The Iroc is powered by a TSI engine, referred to in-house as a Twincharger. Shifting tasks are handled by the DSG direct shift gearbox. About the Twincharger: First employed in the Golf GT in 2006, TSI engines are currently the most efficient four-cylinder gasoline engines in the world. The combination of compressor and turbocharger shows the path to the future. The compressor compensates for the typical powering up weaknesses of turbo-only gasoline engines at low rpms. The turbocharger in contrast packs a mighty punch at higher revs. The combination of both superchargers in large-volume production engines is the only one of its kind in the world. The TSI version used in the concept achieves 155 kW / 210 hp. In principle, a large range of supercharged engines are conceivable for the Iroc that could start significantly under 110 kW / 150 hp. But there’s one thing every engine theoretically employed in the Iroc has to guarantee: Driving fun.

Radiator philosophy:

The new design expression of the Volkswagen concept shows that the Iroc is a car thoroughly designed for dynamics. A look at the front end makes this positioning emphatically apparent. There has never been a radiator grill of this shape for a Volkswagen. By doing so the company is manifesting the decision to use different “Volkswagen faces” for specific models and segments. This is already practiced for the Golf, for example, which features the typical Golf radiator grill in the Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Individual versions, but sports variations of the crest radiator grill for the sportier GT, GTI and R32 versions.

Hexagon of aluminum:

The sports car grill specially designed for the Iroc concept is made of light, brushed aluminum in the outer areas. The honeycombed-shaped structure of the radiator grill has been a signature of the sporty Volkswagen since the debut of the current Golf GTI. Designed as a hexagonal air intake, the grill goes all the way down to the dark front apron. To the right and left of it there are two more air intakes for cooling the brakes. While the upper transverse web of the radiator grill is flush with the engine hood, the short side sections of the frame directly abut the xenon headlights. It is apparent here that the image of the radiator grill hexagon almost inevitably results from the connection of the headlights. The headlight casing itself is comparatively narrow and drawn up to the fenders in the modulation. Together with the radiator grill the headlights pay full honor to the Iroc’s “viper green” paint.

V-shape up to the A-pillars:

As a virtual continuation of the radiator grill lines two elevated and sharply cut flanges divide the engine hood into three sections. In the middle and a bit lower the largest of these surfaces continues the V-shape of the sports car grill up to the A-pillars. The A-pillars themselves are hard to see from the front, because the windshield is extremely wide and overlaps the pillars from the front. The two other surfaces of the engine hood descend into the exposed fenders.

Statement of the surfaces:

Whoever wipes his hand first across one of the headlights then over the fender and one of the doors will feel that the surfaces of the silhouette twist against one another. In particular the waistline above the front wheel arches and the door handles up to the upper edge of the rear lights drawn far to the side demonstrate this effect. Depending on perspective and the way the light falls this causes the side sections to look different each time, fascinating and like a taut muscle.

Endlessly long roof:

Furthermore, it’s the hidden B-pillars, the markedly distinct C-pillars and the embedded rear side window here that together with the seemingly endlessly long roof line impart a completely unique presence and dynamic. The surfaces of the side windows extend the compact body of the Iroc. Still more: They reverse the proportions of classic sports cars – short roof, long engine hood. And this shape makes the Iroc unique. Moreover, the roof spoiler integrated in this section adds even more dynamics, both functionally and stylistically. A completely unique counterpoint to the interplay of green and black of the concept is, last but not least, the sculpturally designed rear lights that are strikingly succinct, even in silhouette.

A typical and yet completely new rear end:

The sculptural shape of the rear lights is most clearly seen from the rear. A typical and yet completely new Volkswagen rear end: The vehicle character here is determined by the relationship of the proportions between roof and shoulder sections and thus the waist. If it is sharply contoured classic sports car lines emerge. And this is exactly what the Iroc has. Due to the roof extending far to the back, the designers were able to dramatically pull in the sides and place the passenger compartment – the roof along with B- and C-pillars – on very sexy shoulders or, better to say, hips. The already wide track has an even wider effect visually. The fact is: The sexy proportions in this case stand in stark contrast to the more tightly drawn core elements of the rear end.

Rear lights like eyes:

This effect is underscored by the nearly eye-shaped contour of the horizontally arranged rear lights, which – being integrated far into the fenders – act like a continuation of the C-pillars. The clear and reduced shape of the rear window is clearly set off from the lower part of the hatch and rear apron. The general view of the broad track together with waisted roof line plus roof spoiler and a diffusor visually suggested in the rear apron imparts a markedly powerful image of the Iroc. Detail in the margins: Even the flat and trapezoid-shaped exhaust pipes comply with the dictates of dynamics, because they continue the shape of the diffusor to the outside.

Variable four-seater:

As outlined, the Iroc is a four-seater. Behind the wide open (and attached just as wide in the roof) hatchback a spacious trunk with over 300 l of storage volume is concealed. The level corresponds to the original Scirocco. The trunk capacity can also be greatly expanded by folding down the back seats. The resulting flat loading surface and the folded down seat backs feature guide rails onto which a multifunctional transportation lock system can be integrated.

Car racing suitability:

The extremely sporty orientation of the Iroc concept is also reflected par excellence in the interior. Under the auspices of the uniquely conceived design theme an interior was developed that was uncompromisingly harmonized for potential racing use. And this at the racing car level as the front bucket seats with integrated 5-point seatbelts and central lock already show. However, the focus of the design lies on gauges and controls. Two large and completely newly designed round instruments form the visual center and highlight of the cockpit: Both main instruments have a bluish glow in a dark acrylic casing. The driver looks into two cylinders with twelve illuminated bars; they create a three dimensional segmentation within the instruments. Two bright metal rings enclose both central gauges. The surfaces of the painted dashboard elements are refined with a crystal structure, similar to other parts used in the interior.

Concept breaks with conventions:

Generally applied, practically all materials represent a creative break with what is known and has been learned. The color and trim designers combined color contrasting materials such as neoprene in “viper green”, leather with reptile embossing (in bicolor black/anthracite) and “breathing” high-tech “space fabric” (in “titan black”). In addition to the instrument panel encased in black leather, a layer of carbon paint which is also black is used on the doors, the roof area and floors and forms the framework for the most important functional blocks. Example of door opener: The robust handle in aluminum look design corresponds in shape and color to the compact central console. Example of gearshift lever: When idle it lies flush in a console and only after ignition moves into operational position – an innovative anti-theft protection system and fascinating visualized technology at the same time. Finally, the following two examples from the dashboard make clear how far the love for detail and for cars goes at Volkswagen: The hexagonal air conditioning vents in matt silver mirror the design theme of the radiator grill. A excerpt from the world of great sports cars is meanwhile the row of classic toggle switches.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept

Earlier this year Volkswagen treated visitors to the Detroit Auto Show with the spectacle of a large SUV concept in the form of the Volkswagen CrossBlue concept. Now they’ve followed it up at the Shanghai Motor Show with a related concept called the CrossBlue Coupe concept. However whereas the original CrossBlue was a hybrid-powered, practically-minded, sensible SUV, the CrossBlue Coupe is a bit more sporty. It’s still a hybrid, but it has more power and a smidgen more style.
The Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe is a five-seater crossover with a wider and lower stance than its the original CrossBlue SUV concept. Sadly, as is normal for auto makers nowadays, the PR folks have conveniently forgotten what the word “Coupe” means, and wrongly labeled the concept as such. Probably in a misguided effort to make it sound more desirable than it really is.

The CrossBlue Coupe concept is based on Volkswagen’s new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture.  This would give any production version a large amount of flexibility when it comes to potential drivetrains. However for the concept VW have elected to fit a hybrid setup which matches a turbocharged, direct injection V6 engine with two electric motors (one at the front and one at the rear). Altogether the system produces a rather handy 415 horsepower. Allowing for an impressive 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of just 5.9 seconds, and a 146 mph top speed.

At the same time the hybrid drivetrain also offers frugal fuel consumption (3.0 l/100 km, or 94.1 mpg).  It can also operate under battery power alone for up to 20 miles (33 km). In electric mode, only the rear-mounted electric motor provides power, and it can propel the car at speeds up to 75 mph before the V6 kicks in.
Volkswagen say the CrossBlue Concept provides a glimpse of what future SUV’s from the company will look like. So expect to see similar looking vehicles in VW’s showrooms within the next few years.
Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe Concept Specifications:
Power / Performance: 415 HP; 700 Nm (516 lbs ft); 0 to 60 mph estimated at 5.9 seconds
Dimensions: length 4,889; width 2,015 mm; height 1,679 mm;
Track widths: front/rear 1,709 mm/1,726 mm
Unladen weight: 2,220 kg (concept car with battery system)
Drive units / power: V6 TSI 220 kW; E-motors: front 40 kW, rear 85 kW; system power (TSI + battery) 305 kW

Volkswagen Tiguan Match special edition introduced in UK

Volkswagen announced the introduction of the new Tiguan Match compact SUV, which costs £450 less than the Tiguan SE it replaces, but comes with £700-worth of extra equipment.

Every Tiguan Match comes packed with features which make it as practical as it is great value. On top of the already generous specification of the outgoing SE, the new Tiguan Match adds the RNS 315 colour touchscreen satellite navigation system and new 17-inch ‘New Orleans’ alloys.  Connectivity comes thanks to standard Bluetooth, as well as an MDI media interface with leads for iPhone (4 and earlier) and USB, while there’s also a CD/DVD player, SD card provision and a DAB digital radio.  A multifunction steering wheel (trimmed in leather, just like the gear lever and handbrake) enables operation without taking your hands from the wheel.

Standard 2Zone climate control helps to keep the temperature just right on either side of the cabin, while folding picnic tables on the back of the front seats ensure that rear-seat passengers are well catered for.  As on all Volkswagen models, standard rear Isofix mountings make securing a child-seat child’s play.  The rear seats also split 60:40, can be moved lengthways, to increase luggage space or legroom as required by up to 16 cm, while the backrest angles can be adjusted by 23 degrees.  The rear seats can also be folded to increase luggage capacity from 470 to 1,510 litres.  The front passenger seat backrest can also be folded forwards, to create a load space that is up to 2.5 metres long.  There’s plenty of room for smaller items both in the under-seat drawers and also under the boot floor, alongside the space-saver spare wheel.

The Tiguan Match is available with a wide choice of frugal and advanced diesel and petrol engines and gearboxes, from a two-wheel drive 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS petrol to a four-wheel drive 2.0-litre TDI 177 PS turbodiesel, with CO2 emissions from just 139 g/km.  On the road prices start at £23,245 for the Match 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS.

The Tiguan Match is available to order now through Volkswagen Retailers, with the first cars arriving in September.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Shark Cage

(from Volkswagen Press Release) VOLKSWAGEN JOINS DISCOVERY CHANNEL FOR SECOND YEAR AS PRESENTING SPONSOR OF SHARK WEEK

--Volkswagen continues relationship with Discovery Channel, bringing a new version of the VW Beetle Shark Cage back for Shark Week 2013--

Herndon, VA - Volkswagen of America (VWoA) announced today its renewed relationship with Discovery Channel for the network’s annual Shark Week, which kicks off on Sunday, August 4th at 8PM ET/PT.
This is VWoA’s second consecutive year as presenting sponsor for Shark Week, one of television’s most anticipated annual programming events. Building on last year’s wildly successful integration featuring the Beetle Shark Cage, VWoA is excited to raise the bar in 2013 with the Subaquatic Road Trip. Working with marine biologist Luke Tipple, and Discovery’s branded entertainment team, last year’s observation cage has been transformed into a 2013 Beetle Convertible, bringing the underwater action to the ocean floor and the viewers at home even closer to the deep dive.
“While most of the entertainment world has adapted to our busy schedules through on-demand viewing, Shark Week is a rarity in that it still captures millions of viewers in a week-long shared experience,” said Kevin Mayer, vice president marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Volkswagen is excited to add our unique touch to an event with such an impressive impact on pop culture.”
“As Discovery’s longest-running franchise and TV’s must-see summer event, Shark Week has a loyal audience, which we are proud to engage in this unique sponsorship with Volkswagen,” said Scott Felenstein, executive vice president, advertising sales, Discovery Communications. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Volkswagen, connecting them to our passionate fans to help drive brand awareness and showcase VW’s ingenuity and originality.”
VWoA’s social media sponsorship also will expand this year, including the Shark Week Plus co-branded simultaneous viewing app, designed to attract audiences and enabling sharing across iPhone® and iPad® devices, and online. Viewers also will be able to share photos, videos, and Shark Week news directly from their mobile devices to online social media outlets including Discovery and Volkswagen Facebook and Twitter pages. Additionally, VW and Discovery will encourage fans to participate in this year’s new online experience Subaquatic Road Trip, enabling them to be transported into the 360-degree view of Luke Tipple’s underwater journey in the VW Beetle Shark Cage. In addition to Discovery’s Twitter hashtag #SharkWeek, Volkswagen will once again create buzz on Twitter using the custom Shark Week hashtag #VWSharkWeek.
On-air elements include a Shark Week short-form content series allowing viewers a chance to watch as Luke Tipple takes the Beetle Convertible Shark Cage for a Subaquatic Road Trip along the ocean floor, and Shark Week “sneak peeks”, which offers an exclusive look into Shark Week programming beginning the week of July 22nd.
Recently, the relationship between VWoA and Discovery garnered recognition from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Shark Cage campaign was awarded a Silver Lion for Best Brand or Product Integration into a Feature Film, Existing TV Show and/or Series and a Bronze Lion for Best Media Campaign for a Car and Automotive Service.
The on-air content was developed by Volkswagen's creative Agency of Record Deutsch LA. MediaCom facilitated the partnership between Volkswagen and Discovery.
